The League
Title was won on the track in 1963 by the "Stoke Potters" but was
lost in the courtroom when Wolverhampton appealed to the Speedway
Control Board over the inclusion of John Mills in the Middlesbrough
team in an end of season league match against Wolverhampton. The
Court ruled that the contract for John Mills had not been registered
correctly and deducted his points from the score so reversing the
result of the match in Wolverhampton's favour. It therefore made
Wolverhampton the League Champions some time after the season had
ended. Unfortunately it was also the end of speedway racing at the
Sun Street track as the stadium was sold for redevelopment. John
Mills was killed in a flying accident in Australia two or three
years ago.
