Stoke 51
Newport 42
STOKE Easy
Rider
Potters
completed
their first
double of
the season
as they
dispatched
the Newport
Wasps 51-42
to take all
three points
in their
final
Premier
Trophy
meeting at
Loomer Road
on Saturday
night.
Rain at the
scheduled
start time
made the
Loomer road
bowl a
little
greasy in
the early
heats and
helped Jason
Bunyan in
the opening
heat after
Wasps
skipper and
former
Potter Mark
Lemon
slipped on
the inside
allowing new
Potters
number one
Bunyan to
pass him and
take the
chequered
flag.
Stoke went
in front in
heat three
as Klaus
Jakobsen
made a
superb start
to take a
comfortable
victory with
skipper Lee
Complin
following
him home
after he
managed to
pass Jordan
Frampton to
take second
place and
give the
Potters a
5-1 as they
went into a
11-7 lead.
Stoke
extended
their lead
in heat six
as Bunyan
makes the
start and is
put under
pressure by
American
Brent Werner
for a lap or
so before
Bunyan pulls
clear, Tom P
Madsen keeps
hunting up
the inside
line
attempting
to pass
Werner and
his
persistence
pays off as
he gets
passed
Werner going
into the
final lap to
give the
Potters
their second
5-1 of the
night and a
22-14 lead.
Newport
struck back
immediately
with a 5-1
advantage
from
Frampton and
ex-Stoke
rider Paul
Fry who kept
Jesper
Kristiansen
at bay after
Phil Morris
had fallen
to reduce
the deficit
to four
points. The
Wasps cut
the lead
further in
heat eight
as Chris
Kerr take
victory from
Madsen with
James Holder
taking third
place after
Mark Burrows
suffered a
engine
failure
after his
chain
snapped
while he was
in second
place the
Stoke’s lead
is cut to
just two
points.
The Easy
Rider
Potters then
piled on the
pressure as
they gained
two 5-1’s
and a 4-2 in
the next
three heats
to lead
39-27 after
eleven
heats.
Jakobsen and
Complin the
highlight of
the three
heats as the
Potters
pairing went
either side
of Brent
Werner who
had made the
gate to take
first and
second place
and leave
the Wasp in
their wake.
Newport
team boss
Laurence
Rogers
introduced
Frampton as
a tactical
ride in heat
twelve, but
Dane
Jakobsen
made the
start only
to suffer an
engine
failure
while
leading
allowing
Frampton to
take victory
from Burrows
with James
Holder
gratefully
taking third
to give the
Wasps a 7-2
heat
advantage
which left
the score at
41-34 after
twelve
races.
The Wasps
reduced the
deficit
further with
a 4-2 in
heat
thirteen as
Lemon made
an electric
start with
Bunyan all
over his
back wheel
for the four
laps but
just unable
to find
enough drive
to get him
passed the
Wasps
skipper with
Werner
holding out
Phil Morris
for third
place.
The Easy
Rider
Potters seal
all three
points in
the final
two heats as
Complin
looking more
like his old
self takes
two
successive
heat wins as
Stoke gain
two 4-2 heat
advantages
to gain a
comfortable
51-42
victory over
the South
Wales
outfit.
Lee Complin
said “It’s
good to find
my form
again and to
get amongst
the points,
I felt a bit
more relaxed
tonight and
left Gary
(Flint) to
sort the set
up’s out and
that allowed
me to
concentrate
on my
racing.”
Reserve
Jesper
Kristiansen
said “it was
a good win
although I
felt a
little
uncomfortable
on the bike
tonight as I
have had a
problem with
my knee
after a
couple of
falls at
Birmingham
on
Wednesday.
“The track
was a little
greasy early
on and I had
to stick on
the slick
part of the
track
because of
my knee when
I prefer to
be out in
the dirt,
but the
track
improved
later on in
the meeting
and I
managed to
get an
important
5-1 with
Phil in
eleven which
gave us that
little bit
of breathing
space.”
Kristiansen
went on “I
now have a
week to rest
my knee and
to be ready
for our
league match
against
Newcastle
next
Saturday. “I
should have
been racing
in Denmark
on Wednesday
but I have
to get my
knee right
so I will
not be
racing in
Denmark on
Wednesday
night.”
